When the Work Is Never Done

Last month was about reaching out to our community and understanding the importance of our contacts during this immense transition. Now equipped with one another, our fostered sense of wonder, and the source of our inspiration, we continue along the road to find an enormous mountain obstructing our path. The 9 year, 4 month is a lot about chipping away at what stands between us and the next step. With the number 4 signaling effort, pragmatism, and security, we are being asked to spend a whole month exerting consistent, and most of all strategic effort on dismantling what is no longer serving us.

It’s less magical than the 3 month. I always tell my clients in this cycle that this is simply plain old hard work. Here, we are asked to gather the tools we have and start applying them at the right time with the right pressure until the work is done.

I get it - the work is never done. I’m also frustrated. There is always more laundry to do. The second you get home from the grocery store, a new list spawns. The deadline you meet is only ever met by another. The minute I finish this monthly newsletter, there are 7+ drafts waiting for me. Consider, for a moment, letting go of the outcome a bit and just focusing on what you’re facing right now.

Recently I watched the Humboldt County Town Hall meeting with Jared Huffman, the U.S. representative for California’s 2nd congressional district. It’s one of the best town hall meetings I’ve seen in the wake of several videos coming out of state representatives not showing up publicly at all, too cowardice to face the people they lie to. Something he said is very relevant to the message for this month:

“You cannot afford for me to get overwhelmed, to wallow in despair. I have to get back in that arena every single day and fight for all of you so that I can be effective. The way that I’m trying to do that is I’m trying to be selective. You can’t swing at every single pitch. Believe me, I could be outraged almost by the minute right now just watching my newsfeed, but what I’m trying to focus on are what are the things I can do to have the best chance for stopping something really bad from happening…”

Our collective effort should consist of many different kinds of resistance, and they need a strategy. We need to get grounded so that we know exactly how to proceed moving forward, and remain centered in what’s important.

Four is the “fix it” number. Sometimes we fix things by repairing the broken parts and rebuilding. This time around, we fix things by dismantling the problem. We come to the mountain, reduce it into several manageable parts, and chip away. Perhaps this time around we fix things by letting go of old patterns or habits, or dissecting the problem to see everything from a different angle.

April has maps and plans. It has the blueprints for the revolution. Tired, we now take methodical steps forward, swinging only when it counts and hitting where it hurts.
