Character Chart: A Map to the Nine Lives
After we were dismissed, I stuck around the chapel, inconspicuously waiting for a turn with Aslin and hoping my presence wouldn’t draw attention.
“What are you waiting around for?” my wife asked when I told her to go home with the kids without me.
“There’s something I have to check before I leave. It won’t take long. I’ll arrive shortly after you.” I gave her the warmest smile I could muster despite my uneasy nerves. She set the kids by a few pews down from where I stood and came back.
“What is this all about?” she wanted to know.
“It’s nothing, hopefully. I just want to check in with Aslin, see what he thinks about this mission Herus is sending him out on.”
Cira’s expression became relaxed with understanding.
“Well then ask for the both of us, this has me interested as well.”
“Will do.” I waved to the kids who were huddled together with insecurity, staring at us.
“I knew you still cared.” Cira added before she turned around and left me to wait there.
