Character Chart: A Map to the Nine Lives
White stripes against a dim holographic shimmer. That is what the Subpaxan patient wears. The fabric is taut with a vinyl feel to it. I cannot get the image, nor the texture out of my mind.
They arrive terrified, not knowing their fate or what will become of their children without their support. Some are children, some are babies. A few are elderly, but they all wear the same garb. All of them are people I would never have met had their demographic been what made them most vulnerable.
The Subpaxan race was a society of exiles that existed outside city limits of every Paxan development around the world. We were taught not to associate with them as children, to not even look at them. We are told that they are sinners of the highest degree, and have therefore received the highest punishment for disgracing the meaning of our existence. This punishment is eternal poverty.
It is legend that Pax casted them out after the Dark Era, when they refused to worship that which the divine soil gave them. And now, here they are arriving in the multitude into East Wing Medical. We needed them at that time more than ever because this virus was also at the detriment of Paxans, who were dying in the hundreds every day. Paxan or not, the reptilian flesh of our world was at stake. This was painfully evident at the meeting with the Board of Medicine.
