Character Chart: A Map to the Nine Lives
In the dark surroundings of Medical’s conference room, a plate of steaming hot food was placed in front of me. Already equipped with tea, the surprise of cafeteria personnel appearing from the darkness made me grip the cup tighter and pull it close. I watched the heat radiate off it, causing visual distortions in the air above. It was appetizing, but I couldn’t bring myself to consume the late-night meal. Instead, I let myself become hypnotized by the warped air.
It had been the end of a 72-hour shift. A good seven paces away from where I sat was Supervisor Poloc. In front of her were several files and a recorder. To her left, a record keeper and pen. A single desk light loomed over her work casting a soft glow over her face. She also sat in silence, sifting through what appeared to be endless amounts of paperwork, a bottomless pit of compiled reports and fires to put out. As she did this, she composed what I assumed were a list of agendas and questions for what had ensued in her absence. This was the first time my shift ended without assigned tasks.
