How I Prepare You for a Reading
Deconstructing common misconceptions so that I can reach you
I started learning numerology when I was 14.
I was visiting my cousin Jen in Delaware for the summer, where we eventually found ourselves in a Barnes and Noble, my second favorite place on the planet (the first is the beach). Jen unknowingly opened up a can of worms that day. As I wandered through the aisles, somehow coming up empty-handed after not finding anything I really connected with, I ran into her in the New Age section.
She was holding “Glynis Has Your Number”, an introductory exploration of numerology written by Glynis McCants. To be completely honest, I thought it looked stupid (Sorry Glynis. I’ll have you know it later became my numerology bible).
I already had my feet wet in the occult, having acquired a Ouija board, tarot cards, and a crystal collection at a young age. The occult never scared me, it only ever captivated me, and all of it came naturally. There were other tools of divination I was interested in, and this book, particularly in the way it was presented, simply didn’t pique my interest at the time. I turned it down gently, also not wanting her to spend money on me.
“I know you and I know you should have this book.” Jen insisted.
“We’ll take it home, pick up some wine, do our numbers. It’ll be fun!” She says. I couldn’t argue with that.
So that’s what we did.
You might be saying to yourself “Ah. So that’s when the magic happened, when Kerry realized her future as a numerologist.”
It was the opposite lol.
When I did my numbers, I was pretty disappointed (although not gravely as I was enjoying the quality time I had with my cousin).
There I sat in her kitchen reading my numbers, reading about some other person. Nothing I read resonated at all, except for the part about the 5 life path escaping in books and having a vivid imagination.
Jen, on the other hand, hit it off with her number. Jen was the model 7 life path, true to her form. All her other numbers hit on relevant things.
Dejected, I kept on calculating. I did my friends and my relatives, and that’s what made me stop. Numerology is simply pattern recognition, which was something I didn’t know I naturally had until later on, for when I began decoding all the important people in my life, I started drawing lines and connecting the dots. Numerology was giving me an outlet and a tool for the investigator in me, which ironically is one of the traits outlined in the 5 life path section of this book.
Rather quickly, I developed a knack for guessing what a person’s life path number was, just from talking with them for a few minutes and sitting in what it felt like to be around them. Spooky! I took this aptitude with me to parties, and events with family and friends.
My sister would often have friends over when I visited her, and after a few drinks in, people were more open and willing to be vulnerable about themselves, so when I mentioned I was learning numerology, they would inquire about it and I’d inevitably end up giving them readings.
I freaked a lot of people out doing this, which in turn freaked me out a little, as it was only something I had just learned, yet could present in a manner that both resonated and gave a uniquely safe space for people to open up in and explore themselves.
I am eternally grateful for what my cousin did for me that day, because this is a true gift. To be clear, my oddly innate ability to understand this material is not the gift, but rather how people have trusted me enough with who they are, trusted me enough to get to know them. People have, and often tell me things about themselves they don’t share with anybody else. This is sacred. I am so grateful that I get to learn and experience people in a way that goes beyond the shallow understanding we have for one another. It is a privilege to have been able to get to know people in the most unexpected places in the most unexpected ways, to have them bear their soul and to watch them undergo their own unique transformation as life unfolds.
That being said, before I can even break the surface of a person, there are often a lot of mental constructs and manifestations of the human ego I have to break through in order to reach them. I’ve decided to put together this list here with the hope that it clears up some of the misunderstanding, and counteracts the misuse of this tool of divination, which is widespread and rampant amongst all areas of metaphysics thanks to the commodification of spirituality (a topic for another day).
Here are 9 leading points I make to prime the brain for a reading:
1. What is numerology?:
The study of numbers and how they effect the world qualitatively. It is not a religion or a belief system, it’s a tool of divination.
2. My practice is that of evolutionary numerology.
It’s meant to help the querent gain additional insight about themselves that could facilitate their journey, following the assumption that the set of numbers, or lessons, was chosen as a track of study for the soul. I’m here for the evolution of the soul, and all its levels. I’m not here to help you become rich, famous, or tell you how to get back with your ex. These tools are sacred, treat them as such. Treat your life as such.
3. There are no good or bad numbers.
This is the hardest part of my job honestly and what I come up against the most. I often have to spend a lot of time and effort first trying to unravel our duality consciousness, which we all have whether we’re aware of it or not. It’s how everything operates in the limited 3-d reality in which we reside, but it holds us back in a lot of ways. It’s a reflex of our psyche to think that if something is “good”, then there also must be something “bad”. This is also fueled by our ego actively looking for the bad in ourselves and in others. There is, instead, what you would call a low and high vibration to each number (for lack of a better phrase). Because of the nature of this world, many if not most people are lost or become lost and they gravitate towards the lower vibration of their signature. A healthy person is willing to look at themselves and determine how to best contribute their life’s path to the world, and live it. I’ve never encountered a number that was more bad than good, and vice versa. It’s a person and their free will choice that decides this.
4. Just because you’re one thing, doesn’t mean you can’t be another.
For example, when telling a 3 life path that they are the communicator, they might object and say “But I really feel like my life is about spirituality. I think I’m more like a 7”. Hint: We’re all on a spiritual path. We all have elements of leadership, love, communication, teaching, freedom, nurturing, spirituality, money, philanthropy, and so on (going through the 9 numbers). The numbers simply tell us what’s in our toolbox and what lessons we need to learn. At the end of the day, the 3 will have to learn how to express themselves and prioritize their joy. That doesn’t mean spirituality, or anything else, will not have a role in their life.
5. The numbers that come from your name may not feel right.
This is because our names can change and are not set in stone. Our names are like clothes that we wear, and our birthdates go deeper than that. When people don’t resonate with their life path number, I wonder if they don’t have their birthday right, or if they haven’t come into themselves yet due to age, trauma, or any other kinds of resistance. For example, I’m a 5 life path and so are my brothers, so there was very little room left for me to be a 5 life path. Notice how different twins can be.
6. There is a compatibility aspect with numbers and sometimes they’re at odds with one another.
We are many different things trying to be one thing. Because what we’re wearing and what is on the inside can sometimes be very different, this creates conflict that we may not be aware of, whether it’s with others or internally. It doesn’t mean we can’t live harmoniously within ourselves.
7. We are not under the control of the numbers and the stars.
Instead, they are a mirror. This is a co-creation.
8. Your numerology chart is a toolbox.
It is not a set of instructions. It is a set of kills, knowledge, and more, for you to use at your discretion.
9. You have more than one purpose.
What any astrologer or numerologist tells you might become a defining revelation of sorts, but it will not be all of what you are. The span of a human life can contain what feels like many different lifetimes. We are here to be many different things to many different people, to learn many different lessons, and (hopefully) have a far-reaching impact.

All of that resonates with my own experience, in my case when I used to do tarot readings. Especially the bit about parties. I tended to do it in the bar when I was at university. Getting paid in drinks was a nice bonus.
And it's certainly true and delightful, really, how easily people will open up to you and you get the feeling they are telling you some of their innermost secrets. It's like there's some immediate trust thing going on, which almost defies everyday human interactions. Perhaps it's something to do with the innate reaction to 'authority' figures. By 'authority' I mean 'acknowledged expert', a bit like going to the doctor and discussing intimate issues. Or a psychotherapist, even.
And it's always very pleasing to get a chance to dispel preconceptions and myths about divination, as you have done here.
You had excellent prep for my boyfriend’s reading. Very helpful for those who are new(er) to numerology.
